Cantabria Labs is sponsoring “The Beautiful Brain” exhibition with works by Santiago Ramon y Cajal at the MIT

With the sponsorship of Cantabria Labs, the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Museum is hosting “The Beautiful Brain”, the largest international exhibition to feature the work of Spanish neuroscientist and Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine Santiago Ramon y Cajal focusing on the brain and brain cells. It will be open to the public at the university campus from 3 May – 31 December 2018, after which it will tour several other North American universities for a two year period.

The exhibition, ‘The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal’, is a collection of 80 drawings, some of which have never been seen before in North America, and photographs, landmark books and scientific instruments. The exhibition drawings were selected based on their scientific and aesthetic importance by a jury composed of neuroscientists from the University of Minnesota and historians from the Weisman Art Museum.

Santiago Ramon y Cajal combined science and art to demonstrate that brain tissue was composed of individual cells. He depicted all his research in drawings and years later, in 1950, thanks to the advances in microscope technology, his theories were proven correct and he became the father of modern neuroscience.

Cantabria Labs has endorsed this MIT initiative with the aim of helping research by Santiago Ramon y Cajal, fundamental for the development of medicine and of great intellectual value, to continue to tour the world to inspire more people and bring them closer to science.

Apart from supporting this initiative, Cantabria Labs sponsors and promotes biomedical innovation programs and activities at the MIT through a three-year agreement signed in 2017.
